Regional Publishers Innovation Fund re-opens

Regional Publishers Innovation Fund re-opens

Last year AAP and our friends at Cognitives partnered with a number of country newspapers to secure government grants for their digital projects. We're helping these publishers to implement holistic visions for their digital operations, with website upgrades, paywall integration, print system integration, and most importantly, ongoing strategic consultation. Our partners had $1.3M worth of grants approved, ranging from $80K-$300K.

Today a second batch of funding was announced - for regional publishers only (here's a postcode list to find out if you qualify).

It is expected that many of the regional applicants that missed out in Round 1 have a strong chance of succeeding in "Round 1B" with the application process and eligibility criteria being clarified. Thankfully there is also a much longer application period than Round 1.

What is the fund for?

In the Government's own words:

"Its objective is to provide these businesses with financial security in the medium term to allow them to take calculated risks to reorient their business models to adapt to the digital age."

What's changed since last time?

  • The "Regional Grant Opportunity" uses left-over funding from round one of the Fund (up to $12.4 million)
  • Grants are capped at $400,000 per applicant
  • Metro publishers are NOT eligible in this round
  • The application form has a strong focus on business case and projected numbers

Is my business eligible?

The eligibility criteria is much clearer this time around.

  • Applicants must be an incorporated company
  • Applicants must have an Australian Business Number (ABN) and be registered for GST
  • Applicants must be a ‘regional publisher’

And then there's the "merit" criteria

  • The applicant is a publisher of public interest journalism with an Australian perspective.
  • The applicant has robust editorial policies and complaints-handling
  • The applicant makes a strong business case

Applications for the Regional Grant Opportunity open on 5 April 2019 and close at 2 pm (AEST) on 14 June 2019.
