More than words: Five easy ways to enhance your blog posts

Jazz up a text-heavy article with interactive elements, embeds and creative alternatives to essays.

The online world has created the age of the short attention span – you only have a few moments to grab your reader’s attention before they wander off elsewhere. There are two steps to keeping readers on your website for longer: create original and engaging content, and present it in a way that is easy to consume. Here are five ways to jazz up a blog post to keep readers focused to the end.

1. Insert visual content

No matter how good your ideas are, presenting them in large, unbroken blocks of text can be off-putting to today’s fickle internet users. Break up the text with interesting and relevant photos, cartoons, videos, diagrams and infographics to keep your readers engaged and help explain your point succinctly.

2. Use subheadings and block quotes

Subheadings are a great way to break up the content into chapters or relative points and make the story easy to read. Putting important points in bold is also an engaging way to make your main ideas jump out at the reader and keep their attention from wandering off. Use bold or larger fonts to make subheadings stand out and make your overall post look more appealing.

Choose a compelling quote from the article and make it stand alone.

3. Social elements

Web users love to engage with content, by expressing their opinion on the ideas expressed, communicating with the author of the post or sharing it with friends on social media. Including interactive elements such as a comments section allows readers to engage with the post feel more connected to your site. Make sure your content is easy to share by having handy icons at the top and bottom of posts, making it more likely that readers will share it on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest, enticing new visitors to your site.

4. Embed fun, Interactive content

There are many elements you can embed in a blog post to entertain and inform readers. Gifs and memes are a fun way to illustrate a point, but are probably more relevant if your content is light-hearted and attracts a young audience. Music players, puzzles, quizzes and polls are also fun ways to engage your readers and keep them coming back.

5. Provide relevant links

Providing links to articles that expand on your ideas shows that you have done your homework can help readers find more interesting information on the topic. You don’t want to lose your readers though, so ensure any links you include open up in a separate window so your readers aren’t leaving your site.
